Case Study: Eoin
Synopsis
Eoin never slept well at night. He suffered from Eczema which has now come under control. He was rocked to sleep until he was 4/5 months, then his parents used the control crying method which worked for a time. Eoin was not a good eater so for a while Eoin would get a bottle during the night if he awoke. Eoin’s eating habits improved so this bottle was dropped using the controlled crying method . Although he may still wake during the night his parents would use the control crying method again and he would go off to sleep.
Eoin got a tummy bug at 15 months where he needed lots of extra attention during the night. This had resulted in Eoin only going to sleep in parents bed as Eoin would not get in his own cot. Eoin’s parents tried controlled crying again but Eoin got very upset and it didn’t work. When Eoin’s parents contacted me Eoin would only sleep restlessly in his parents’ bed. He also would not go to his cot for a nap, he needed to be pushed in his buggy to get off to sleep
Diagnosis
Eoin made negative associations due to controlled crying techniques being used. He would then get overtired and have a restless nights sleep.
Outcome of Consultation
I created a plan for Eoin’s parents which stated how positive associations could be made between Eoin and his cot. I advised that they have some fun playtime in his cot when it’s not bed time so that he would learn that the cot is a fun place to be. We set a structured bedtime routine so Eoin was well aware of when bed time would be and what would happen. When Eoin awoke during the night I advised that Eoin got positive reassurance so he would know he was not alone. I advised that initially Eoin would not be left in his room alone when he went to sleep and when he was comfortablely falling asleep in his cot they would then leave the room, however returning regularly to check on him and not leaving him to cry. During the night Eoin’s parents also needed to respond quickly to Eoin so he would realise he is not by himself .
Within a week Eoin made considerable improvements going to bed, he would go to bed and be asleep within a few minutes. After two weeks of constant reassurance during the night Eoin learned to resettle himself back to sleep. Eoin and his parents are now enjoying full nights sleep.*
